JUNIOR HIGH ENGLISH AND SOCIAL JUSTICE EDUCATION

While employed at Foothills Academy Society as a Junior High English teacher, I delivered differentiated, relevant and engaging English lessons to grade 7 and 8 students with learning disabilities, and created and facilitated a social justice elective. I also organized and implemented school-wide programs, community guest speakers, and fundraisers that highlighted diverse voices and experiences to create a more inclusive learning environment.

While working a temporary contract with St. John XXIII, I built a strong sense of community and trust through art and music projects and implemented personalized classroom management strategies to meet the diverse needs of my students.

In 2020, I was nominated and then awarded this student award, created in 2017 to recognize Alberta's post-secondary students who demonstrate the academic aptitude and passion to lead their students in a lifelong discovery of history and heritage. The award is an owl and represents knowledge and positive change in the world, an incentive I take seriously in teaching social justice education.

CALGARY WALDORF SCHOOL: While interning at the CWS I had the opportunity to implement arts-based education through theatre, painting, and movement.
ST. MARGARET: While interning in a Spanish bilingual grade four class, I engaged students in differentiated, experiential, concept-based learning activities while incorporating art and First Nations, Métis, and Inuit knowledge.

BEHAVIOURAL SPECIALIST

As a behaviour specialist at The Painted Turtle, a Californian Serious Fun summer camp for children with severe medical conditions, I creatively supported campers behaviour needs for forty kids each week, while mentoring staff on how to best respond to complex behaviour. I prepared camper-behaviour briefings, camper-behaviour support plans, and introduced ways to implement The Zones of Regulation in a camp environment.
BEHAVIOURAL THERAPIST

As a behavioural therapist at Janus Academy, I worked in a classroom with nine other therapists teaching individualized program plans to children with Autism using ABA therapy and discrete teaching trials. I creatively worked to enhance student’s ability to communicate their needs and to equip them with the tools and skills needed to thrive in their homes and communities.

During my time with Camp Amicus,  I developed lasting relationships with children with learning disabilities empowering their self-esteem and social skills. I utilized social coaching strategies, experiential models of facilitation, and creative conflict resolution tactics.Â
As head counsellor in 2015, I was in a leadership role where I trained and supported a team of counsellors on how to best enrich campers experience and effectively respond to behavioural challenges. I refined and improved Camp Amicus’s social skills program making lessons more engaging and meaningful. As program coordinator in 2016, I introduced new field trips, budgeting strategies, and pushed the social skill lesson plans even further using measurable learning objectives.

While interning in the UK with Swiss Cottage, a school designed for children and teens with severe emotional, physical and mental disabilities, I fostered independence in children with severe learning disabilities, autism, down syndrome, and developmental delay.
